Orpington Business Forum in the Community

The purpose of the BID is to drive footfall, improve Orpington's individuality, safety and the appearance of the high street, and bring in more businesses to enrich the shopping experience for all in our community.

What is a BID...? A BID is an organization that would be owned and led by local businesses in Orpington with the aim of increasing the attractiveness and appeal of Orpington by improving trading conditions and addressing the challenges faced by the town centre.

How is it formed? A BID is formed through a ballot of businesses within a specified boundary. In order for the BID to come into existence, a simple majority of those voting must be in favour and their votes must also represent a majority of the aggregate rateable value of the properties that have voted. Once formed, the BID would exist for up to five years after which a further ballot is needed if it is to continue.

How is it funded? BIDs are funded by a small ‘levy’ on all businesses within the BID boundaries based on the rateable value of their property. The amount of the levy and whether there are upper and lower limits is determined entirely by the businesses. The money raised can also be used to attract further funding.

The campaign to establish a Business Improvement District in Orpington has now entered its most critical stage!  Ballot papers have been dispatched to the ratepayers for all 345 eligible business premises in the town centre.  If you are the ratepayer for your business, look out for the ballot pack containing the  pink voting paper, during the next week.  If you are expecting to be a voter but haven’t received the ballot pack by 25 January please let the BID team know on 020 8313 4880.  Completed voting papers are to be sent to Bromley Electoral Services by 5pm Thursday 21 February. Now is the time to vote ‘Yes’ and make Orpington town centre better for business!
